Saree (pudavai; in tamil):

Saree (Sari), an Indian wear makes a woman look graceful, stylish, elegant and sensuous. But it's important to drape a Saree properly as a clumsily draped Saree (sari) brings down the look of the Saree and spoils the whole appearance.

How to drape a saree?

Needed for SAREE
6 yards material called saree
traditional cropped shirt called blouse
underskirt with a drawstring called petticoat -- all these three pieces are color coordinated

Color coordinated
If it is a double bordered saree then the blouse should be the body color.
If it is a single border saree then the blouse should be the same color as the border.
Normally one edge of the saree has more design and is called the 'palloo' unless it is plain/floral material with no border

or extra design.

Wear the petticoat and tighten the drawstring.

Wear the blouse.

Begin at the navel tuch the inner top edge of the saree into the left side of the petticoat.

Wrap the saree around yourself once - ending at the point where you tucked the edge (left side).

Let the saree fall till the hem of the saree touches the floor. Wear your shoes to get the exact length.

Pleat the saree about 5 inches deep with your fingers making sure the pleats are even and straight
7 to 10 pleats.

Temporarily pin these pleats (or with experience, tuck into your waist - again only temporarily.

Gather the other end of the saree and wrap the material again around yourself going from left to right - under your right arm

and over the left shoulder so edge falls to below knee level.

You can pleat and pin the portion that falls over the shoulder, the palloo, to the blouse for a neat look. Make sure the

pleats are spread to cover the bust.

Now straighten any loose portion and tuck the pleats into the waistband. Use a bigger pin to hold the pleats.
Practice makes it perfect. Many Indian ladies can drape a saree in minutes.

Here is the picture illustrations:

Step 1
Start with the Inner Edge(least patterned plain end) of the Saree, with the Fall (lined border) falling along the inside of the bottom edge. Tuck the Inner Edge into the waistband of the Petticoat slightly to the right side, with the rest of the saree wrapping round to the left. The amount you tuck in depends on how tall or short you are or how long you want to wear the saree.

Step 2
Measure the length of the Pallu (the fanciest patterned end of the saree that falls on the outside so that the design can be seen). This will be on the other end of the Saree from the end you have just tucked in. Take this measured Pallu Length (approx. 1 metre) and take it behind you from your left and forward again from your right.

Step 3
Take the Pallu that you have just brought forward from your right, and fling it over your left shoulder for the time being, so it is out of the way. This is done to see how much of the Saree should be pleated into the waistband. The Saree now left in front of you is pleated to tuck into the waistband.

Step 4
Pleat the remaining Saree into five to six inch wide pleats.

Step 5
Hold all the pleats together, making sure the bottom end is level with the rest of the Saree all round.

Step 6
Tuck this bundle of pleats in one movement into the waistband of the petticoat, thus securing it.

Step 7
The Pallu of the Saree can now be arranged to suit your own style. The style normally and most commonly used is flinging the Pallu over the left shoulder or pleating it and pinning it to the left shoulder, so that the Pallu can swing open at the back. Two of the most popular methods of draping the Pallu are shown below.

In office Pinup your Saree, this looks smart and is manageable too.

For an outing or a function, just pinup the tip of the saree and let the rest fall on your hand. This gives a very graceful look. But of course the Saree should have a good fall.

Cotton, Tissue or any starched Sarees should be ironed properly and at the time of draping, the pleats should be done with your hands pressing and shaping it properly.

Put the pin on the back shoulder as this keeps the saree intact and does not show the pin too.

Don't wear a very flared petticoat inside.
