Controversy
Criticism have been raised in some Islamist quarters supposedly due to her attire not being conformant to Islamic Dress Code. According to one report published September 8, 2oo5, an unnamed Islamic scholar had issued a fatwa, saying that her attire is contrary to what is permitted by Islam.A further report published the next day on this fatwa elaborated that Mirza was unfazed by the comments made by Syed Yousaf Bin, the chief patron of the Ulema Board, in Hyderabad. Large numbers of Muslims clerics protested her attire, accusing her of being a "corrupting influence on the youth" She has been widely attacked and vilified in Islamist circles, including a cleric named Haseeb-ul-hasan Siddiqui who said "The dress she wears on the tennis courts…leaves nothing to the imagination, She will undoubtedly be a corrupting influence.". Islamist groups such as Jamiat-ulema-e-Hind allegedly threatened to disrupt her tennis matches, following which the Calcutta police had to tighten security measures to protect her.

In 2oo6, Some newspapers reported that Mirza declined from playing with an Israeli tennis player Shahar Pe'er for fear of violent protests from India's Muslim clerics and their opposition to the existence of Israel.[3] However, these reports were dismissed by Mirza as "baseless" and in 2007, Pe'er and Mirza teamed up again at Wimbledon. The duo made the third round of Wimbledon before being knocked out by the top seeds.

"But for song sequences, the pavada will not even figure in the set of costumes for Malayalam films," Revathy says. "What prevents our costume designers from using this outfit creatively? Our actresses, of course, look good in the pavada."

Aishwarya Rai and Sreedevi wore it in `Kandukonden Kandukonden' and `Devaragam' respectively. "And they looked gorgeous," Revathy adds.

Many teenaged anchors on Malayalam TV channels wear the pavada-blouse. Rimi Tomy, anchor and singer, often dons the combo.

Designer Sheela James is realistic when she says, "We cannot expect the pavada to make a comeback. To the modern girl, it is a formal dress."

One aspect that works to the advantage of the pavada is that it can be adapted and improvised to suit the wearer's taste. "This encourages young women to check it out," says James.

"The girls are keen on adding modern elements to the traditional design. That is, they want the half sari to be embroidered or the blouse to be embellished," says Indu Radhakrishnan of Studio Mrinaliny.

Both the designers acknowledge that the pavada has become a costume, almost a `uniform' for specific occasions.

Going in for salwar kurtas makes sound economic sense. They cost less than the traditional pavada-blouse. With the demand for salwar kurtas going up, the difference in prices is bound to grow.

But for girls like Kanchana of University College, Kariavattom, the pavada would disappear entirely from our campus. "I am so fond of the dress that I never miss an opportunity to wear it. There's something traditional and beautiful about the dress. It seems to carry the spirit of our culture."

Giving Kanchana company are five-year-old Shruti and seven-year-old Nivedita. The kids love pavadayum blousum, kuppi vala (glass bangles) and mulla poovu (jasmine). So, take heart, traditionalists. All is not lost. SHILPA NAIR. THE HINDU.

On a whim, Saumya's mother bought her a Kancheevaram pavada recently.
"Wearing pavada and blouse to college is very uncomfortable and inconvenient. Getting on and off buses, in heavy pavada, is very difficult. It is a decorative outfit, and not a functional one. Hence, it is best to wear it on select occasions. I buy it only once a year, during Onam, and that's the only time I wear it; that is, if there are no marriages to attend," says Siddhi Devi, a B.Com student at Mar Ivanios College.

She prefers jeans and salwar kurta, as they are "very convenient to wear". But she is quick to add, "This does not mean I dislike pavada and blouse."

Even mothers don't want to force the pavada on their daughters. Says Usha, mother of 14-year-old Sharada, who studies in Holy Angels Convent, "Of course, the pavada is very beautiful and traditional, but I don't compel my daughter to wear it. And it is not like she never wears the pavada. We get her one for Onam, weddings or other occasions. At times, she herself demands that she wants to wear it to some function."

Cisy Vinod too does not force her daughters to wear the pavada. "These days, girls have strong views about anything under the sun. Try telling them what they should wear, and you will know," she says.

Sharada disgarees with the view that the pavada is "uncomfortable". "I find the dress very convenient. It's a change from the regular clothes such as jeans, skirts and salwars we wear. But it is definitely not a good idea to wear it on all days of a month."

Mothers, however, would love to see their daughters wear the pavada-blouse frequently. "It gives a certain dignified look to the teenager. I love the dress. But there is no way I can get my daughter to wear it often. Just as the sari has displaced the mundum neriaythum, salwar kurtas have replaced the pavada - blouse," says Lekha Nair, mother of a 20-year-old who hates the pavada-blouse.

Pavada often means the pattu pavada, stitched in shiny Kancheevaram. "I can't think of the pavada in any other material. The gaudiness is part of the fashion statement it makes," says Divya Gopakumar, a Class X student of Holy Angels' Convent.

But not everyone agrees. "Pavadas in printed georgette or other synthetic fabrics, which made good formal as well as casual wear, were popular a decade ago," says Lakshmi, a housewife.

Some girls dislike the pavada because it is "revealing". "With salwar kurta, I can wear a dupatta. But what do I do with a pavada-blouse set? Even a half sari is revealing," argues Smitha, a degree student at Government Women's College.

"I beg to differ," Divya says. "By the way you wear it, you can make even the most decent dress look revealing. It is a question of taste and choice. Take the case of saree. Different generations have worn it in different styles. Does Urmila Matdonkar wear the saree the way Nutan did?"

Some girls say that the pavada-blouse attracts unwanted attention. "In a sea of college-going girls in salwar kurtas, you are a speck. But in pavada and blouse, you are the cynosure of all eyes. I like the dress, but not the attention of the local Romeos," says R. Shirin of the College of Engineering.

As far as dressing is concerned, Hindi films and TV channels are the textbooks for youngsters. "If the Raveena Tandons, Shilpa Shettys and Rani Mukherjees do not wear the pavada (they may not have even heard of this dress!), will our girls do?" asks Revathy, a housewife. "Even Malayalam films have few heroines clad in pavada."

At some point, the pavada did become the garb of the not-so-modern heroine, the village belle. But even in this case, it was a different version of the pavada -- a cross between the north Indian ghagra/lehenga and our traditional pavada.

Anjali gallery: Jeeva's involvement with the character is total and his scintillating performance is what sets "Kattrathu Tamizh" apart from the ordinary.

The film has all the ingredients to make it big.

The film, which takes you through the journey of protagonist Prabhakaran (Jeeva) portrays an appalling reality.

Prabhakaran is a post-graduate in Tamil, who expresses great love for the language and is firm in pursuing his dream.

Jeered for being a Tamil teacher who earns a mere Rs 2,000 a month, he finds solace in his childhood sweetheart Anandhi (Anjali).

But fate has many unpleasant turns in store for him.

His interaction with a friend who earns Rs 2 lakh in the IT industry brings out the inequities existing in the system.

Poverty-stricken Anandhi is forced into prostitution. The hero loses track of her, which adds to frustration and makes him insane.

A pot-pourri of art and commercial elements, Katradhu Tamil tries to touch upon different social issues, especially the divide between the haves and have-nots.

The Story of the Saree

The Indian Saree (a.k.a. Sari, Seere, Sadi) boasts of oldest existence in the sartorial world. It is more than 5000 years old! It is mentioned in Vedas, the oldest existing (surviving) literature (3000 B.C.) Patterns of dress change throughout the world now and then but, the Sari has survived because it is the main wear of rural India. 75% of the population (now a billion as per official estimate) wear versatile sari. We can certainly call this cloth versatile because it could be worn as shorts, trousers, flowing gown-like or convenient skirt-wise--all without a single stitch!

Saree (original--Chira in Sanskrit, cloth) is of varied length. From 5 yards to 9.5 yards tied loosely, folded and pleated, it could be turned into working dress or party-wear with manual skill. For day today dress of middle class women, 5-6 yard sari is comfortable to manage household chores. Working class tucks the same length above the ankles and if they have to work in water or fields, they would tuck the front pleats between the legs to the back, and tie the upper portion round the waist. This left them free movement of hands and legs.

A nine yard saree used to be a connoisseurs pleasure with embellishments, embroidery and gold designing. At the same time it was as safe a dress as trousers. It was worn in the similar way as working saree. But, some pleats covered the ankles as well. A gold silver or cloth belt was fastened which kept pallu, (upper cover) pleats and folds in tact. Jhansi's Queen Laxmibai, Belawadi Mallamma and Kittur Chennamma fought enemy troops on horseback, wearing saree this way. Tight tucking of the front pleats in the back was called Veeragacche or soldier's tuck.

Generally the climate of Indian subcontinent is warm and humid. Saree and its male counterpart dhoti was most suited for this land. Earlier there was hardly any difference between Saree and dhoti because men also liked to flaunt colorful Sarees with brocaded borders (see: Sarees for Men!). They could perhaps be interchanged in needy times. Only the upper portion of the saree-length which covers the chest, left shoulder and at times head, is missing in saree for men.

Styles in wearing saree vary from region to region. Gujarat style and Bengali style are different. So are Mangalorean, Kannadiga, Kodava, Tamilian, Malayali, etc. The Saree is worn in at least 10 to 15 styles throughout the India, though the ways of wearing above used to be common. In Maharashtra and North Karnataka region, wearing a nine yard saree (without a petticoat -- long underskirt --which was superfluous) was in vogue till 20th century. My mother who was a good swimmer, used to wear a nine yard saree tightly and swam in Kali river or Arabian sea along with my father. Wearing swimming costume could just not be dreamt of. But the versatile saree was good enough to move through the waves.

Some people think that Indian saree is influenced by Greek or Roman toga which we see on ancient statues. This is not correct. Saree is essentially Indian and designed to suit local conditions. Cotton was cultivated in India centuries before Alexander the Great landed on the borders of India and Indian cloth (chira or Saree) was a wonder to Greek eyes. In fact, Herodotus and other ancient western historians thought there were cloth-growing trees in India!

Raja Ravi Varma, the distinguished painter of 19th century, toured the entire sub-continent in search of the ideal female-wear. He wanted the best dress for the various goddesses he was asked and commissioned to paint. He selected the a nine yard saree which drapes the body beautifully at the same time exhibiting contours of female anatomy--bust, waist, hips. Most of the female deities he painted are in this style.

An old or worn-out saree is equally utilitarian. Grandmothers used to stitch quilts folding soft and worn-out Sarees and putting bright new cloth on cover, for children which kept them warm. Worn-out thicker Sarees were used as bed covers or blankets in the cradle (as the babies wetted it frequently). For village women, folds of Sarees serve as pouches, bags and haversack to carry grocery and at times babies as well. Some used to make a stand-by cradle out of sree length for the baby. Tying the ends to a nearby tree. White Sarees could be turned into towels, napkins, diapers etc., even after they are worn out.

Dhoti is an abridged version of the saree sans pallu (the throw of the saree). Many Hero-stones (memorials for dead heroes) show the dhoti worn like breeches or shorts with Veeragachche; dagger and other weapons were tucked in dhoti folds.

The Traditional Half Saree (Dhavani or Thavani; in tamil).

Just a couple of decades ago, the half-sari besides being the traditional dress, was also the most popular dress of young girls in Tamil Nadu. The pride of a girl's wardrobe was the pattu-pavadai, worn with a half-sari to match its border. There was no dress that belonged so exclusively to the budding young woman and no woman past her teens would wear it. The half-sari was a transition from the pavadai to the sari, from girlhood to womanhood. It prepared a young girl for the more cumbersome 6 yards.

The trend is changing - so LET US BRING THE TRADITION BACK....

Half Saree was very common among young girls of Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Full skirt, short blouse and a davani (shawl) constitutes this dress style.

It is considered to be originated in Tamil Nadu, but is very commonly used in Kerala till about 30 years back. Nowadays with all modern fashions half saree is almost completely diappeared among Kerala girls.

You need an underskirt. A top skirt with border. A blouse similar to a saree blouse. And 2.5 to 3 yards. Blouse should match the color of the skirt. Half saree should match the border of the skirt.

One edge of the half saree is tucked into the middle of the navel. 2-3 small pleats. Take the other end of the material around you and over the shoulder. It's in style to have the edge of the half saree in a 'V' shape at the back.
